1/I read this series numerous times 40ish years ago. I loved it then. If I had this review to make as a12 yo back then, it would be five star all the way. but reading it as an adult.. it seems a bit tied to the times it was written in. lots of smoking, women are second class, more psychedelic description than dialogue and plot. it’s all so thinly spread as to lead to a complete lack of satisfaction in the read. for the people the five stars are not for how the series reads now, but for the impact it made all those years ago. This series was ground breaking and lead the way.. shaped the way for much of the modern science fiction and fantasy we enjoy today. this was once a great series in my estimation.. but it’s a little hard to swallow as a modern reader in the 2020’s, kind of in the same way original star trek is just about impossible to watch now the same way we did as kids. I’ve been finding this to be a repeating story for many of the sci fi greats I loved as a young adult.
2/I have The Chronicles of Amber more than 10 times in my life, and recommend them to everyone. They are an easy read, but the characters and the story immerse you into the world. I enjoy them more each time I read them.
3/I don’t get the love for this series. Got three books in and I couldn’t see why I should care about any of these characters, and why It matters at all whether Amber is destroyed. The characters disrespect all life, except for themselves, and never explain what is so awesome about ruling Amber, versus ruling anywhere else.
