1/I enjoyed every moment of this book. Michelle Robinson Obama tells us of her life growing up in Southside Chicago; meeting, dating then marrying Barack Obama; then campaigning with him and living in the White House. She mixes her personal story with national events. I loved the behind the scenes insights and details. She is truly an extraordinary woman with profound intelligence and warmth.
2/Excellent memoir about finding one’s voice, making peace with the ever-changing nature of life, and importance of community. I enjoyed reading about Obama’s childhood on the South Side of Chicago (as a Chicago transplant, I recognized many of the landmarks she recounts) and about studying law only to find out it wasn’t a fit for her. I think many of us can relate to the idea of putting the work in and then realizing the outcome isn’t what we expected. From there, the book talks about her work at U Chicago doing community outreach, then her ambivalence about her husband’s growing political career, before tackling her experience during her eight years as First Lady. While she outlines many of the political issues and accomplishments during the Obama terms, I appreciated that the book never comes off as a dry recollection of the political points but rather a very vivid, compelling take on the challenges of balancing family and personal life with the demands of the office. Funny, relatable, charming and candid. Despite its commanding length I devoured it in a couple days. I would highly recommend.
3/Loved this book so gave it as a gift to share in all the emotions it elicited. She’s a terrific writer & very inspirational. Loved the journey she took me on!
