Reviews:

1/It’s every bit as engrossing and enjoyable as “The Eye of the World” or “The Dragon Reborn,” but with some setbacks that justify the name. From Tear to the Waste, Tanchico, and the Two Rivers, our heroes face off against overwhelming odds, and nothing is certain or predictable. “The Shadow Rising” seizes all the excitement and momentum from book three, adds its own new threads and mysteries, develops relationships and character arcs, and ultimately leaves us suspended somewhere between satisfaction and anticipation for the next one. It’s a fantastic addition to the series.

2/Excellent character development for all of the characters paired with some of the most impactful events in the series so far.

3/I have to admit these books are daunting. They are long and filled with a myriad of characters. But even so, this was worth the time it took me to read it.

Jordan has done what Tolkien did with The Two Towers: split up the group into more manageable levels and set each group on separate quests. STOP HERE if you haven’t read the series from the start. This series cannot be started anywhere else and must be read in order to have it make any sense at all.

You have been warned.

This book reveals the origins of the Aiel (Mat, Egwene, and Rand) as well as more about the Seanchan and the Forsaken (Nynaeve and Elaine). My favorite is the Two Rivers saga with Perrin and Faile. And there is still the Tar Valon and Min. All have complex stories, although my least favorite part was Nynaeve and Elain hunting the Black Ajah.
