Reviews:

1/This book will break your heart, while alternatively making you chuckle and at times warms your heart. The 1980’s in Glasgow was a time of unemployment and poverty for blue collar workers. Alcoholism was prevalent along with childhood abuse and neglect. Add a young boy coming to terms with his sexuality, and it makes for a deeply troubling time. Douglas has a way with character development and vivid descriptions of what the characters see, hear and feel. I am wondering what happened to Liz’s baby boy? I hope Douglas writes a sequel to this book so we can walk with Shuggie through his late teen/early adult years.

2/This is an amazing book. I previously read young mungo and the two as a set paint a wildly luminescent mural of tragedy, sadness and neglect and yet… somehow also manage to infuse the desperate misery with something like pure joy. I loved the Scottish colloquialisms and regional phrases. The narrator was fantastic. This story will probably break your heart so be warned but it was an incredibly worthwhile and enriching read detailing the desperate and deceptive hope of one whom has the unfortunate suffering of loving a self destructive person. In this case the scenario is utterly devastating as the destructive individual is meant to be the caregiver and protector of those who suffer the cruelty of loving her. I can’t wait to read more from this talented author.

3/Stuart’s command of language is spot on. You feel the cold and rain. You live deep inside the characters. It is an unforgettable book. It is sad and tragic and a tiny bit hopeful. Not to be missed.
