Before reading The Cruel Prince, I had heard so many good things about it via my friends and the internet and in my opinion, the stuff said is true. This book was such a good read and I just started reading the sequel a couple days ago. However, I gave this 4 stars, and not 5 because I don’t think it is suitable for all reader’s interest due to the fact that even though Holly Black was able to keep Jude and Cardan’s love-hate relationship nicely written and weave in Jude’s mental health issues from childhood and early life trauma, some readers might not fully enjoy those two tropes/topics combined. In this novel, three sisters, Jude, Vivienne, and Taryn’s parents were murdered and the three young girls were taken to live in the High Court of Faerie, away from the mortal world. There, Jude meets Cardan (the wicked son of the High King Eldred) and they instantly become enemies, not to anyone’s surprise because most fey despise mortals. As the book goes on, it is so satisfying to the mind to be able to experience Jude’s journey to at first become a knight, but when that dream is shattered, struggle to spy for Prince Dain, and, finally, when the entire royal family was murdered, Jude’s division in her mind on what to do with the kidnapped Cardan and be able to gain power. Despite these many conflicts throughout the novel, the main conflict is Jude’s struggle with her mental health and trauma issues, which is very sentimental and relatable to many readers. The main setting of the novel is the faerie world, which is enticing to readers that enjoy fantasy novels, but again, some readers might not enjoy that setting as much as others. Lastly, my favorite part of this book is when Locke tests Taryn’s love for him by becoming Jude’s lover. When Jude realized what was happening she thought “When I allow myself to truly think on it, I cannot fault Locke for choosing her. I am violent. I’ve been poisoning myself for weeks. I am a killer and a liar and a spy. I get why he chose her. I just wish she had chosen me.” This quote hit so deep for me and it got me thinking and connecting the book to the world and my own life.
2/I thought the plot was pretty good, but the characters….I don’t get it. I don’t understand why people like Jude and Cardan together, as so far he’s just a bully and they weren’t even together. Her twin was a little….ugh, can’t even describe how much I dislike her.
Her adopted father is complicated as is Jude. Most of the Fae are horrible, but again, it doesn’t take away from the fact that the plot was good. I kept going, intrigued, wondering what would happen next. Curious how Jude will control Cardan and looking forward to it
3/I hate to say it… This book took 15 chapters for me to REALLY become engrossed. I’m surprised I even gave it that long. Once it got going, it got good and I will be reading book 2. The beginning of the book read like a young teenager wrote it, which I suppose may be the point, since Jude is young. Not my favorite book, but still going to read on, now that I’m invested.
