1/This series is great and this book on its own is fantastic
2/I believe that reading this as a complete novel vs the serialized release makes this a much stronger story. I really enjoyed seeing Lt. Wilson becoming the focus of this novel, and was impressed that each individual story built upon and moved the plotline forward. I was very happy that Hart Schmidt’s character has been given a detailed backstory and has become buddy buddy with Wilson. I’m very eager to read the 6th book in this wonderful series.
3/I blew through the first three novels in this series pretty fast; so fast that I decided to skip Zoe’s Tale and come straight on to this one. It still has Scalzi’s smooth writing style, but I found the episodic style failed to grip me sometimes. I still would have given The Human Division four stars, or 3.5 rounded up, if the central question of the novel hadn’t been left unanswered. I love character-driven novels as well as the next human, but I’m still enough of a mystery reader to demand to know the answer to Whodunnit? by the end of the last chapter. I’ll probably read the next book in the series, but after a break for some fantasy writing.
