Reviews:

1/I first read this book in high school and I grew up in a small town in the Midwest where cultural diversity was nonexistent. This was a great prospective that helped me identify with someone my age who made her own religious choices, just as I had.

I think it’s a great book for any middle school or high school classroom or library.

2/I used to read way more haram books when I was a young teen like 12-13 I read this now (18) and I loved it! Reading books with Muslim characters is important for Muslims especially girls! And it’s not the Muslim representation that you see like on Netflix where we’re supposedly oppressed it’s an experience of a Muslim girl helps you feel normal. It does has some parts were I wasn’t so sure of in terms of aqidah but it was great!

3/This story is one that will empower and educate. As a person of color I find it difficult to find literature and works of media in general that authentically and honestly illustrate my experience, without taking away the core truth that we are all people existing within the world. Amal’s story is told in a hilarious and honest way. There are many moments of raw and hard to swallow truths of racism and discrimination. Something I love about this story is how the reader follows Amal and the people within the community. We see how each person is establishing their identity and the many pieces that form who they are. It made me want to learn more about Australian history as well because honestly there is so much context and things to unpack. Once again the writer has such a natural flow with the story and doesn’t simplify or dumb down anything; she includes everything and invites the reader to passively learn about Australia and also a perspective of Muslim culture , but in finishing the book I am left ready to be a more active learner about people places and cultures beyond my own. Such a beautiful and empowering story about the power of knowing yourself and also the importance of the journey to finding yourself.
