1/at first i thought it was trivial and self indulgent in the pathetic demise of the main character due to too many unfortunate events. i stayed for the mundane moments and the beautiful little inconsequential descriptions and eventually found myself rooting for casey because though deject for most of the book she really doesn’t give up and moves forward step by step till she’s running straight toward the future she hoped for herself
2/Overall, I did enjoy Writers & Lovers. The story follows struggling author, Casey, as she works on finishing her first novel while also maintaining employment as a waitress. She also starts dating two very different men. I appreciated the description and storyline related to how difficult it is to be an author and I really liked the main character and the personal growth she went through. This book was supposed to have taken place in the late 1990’s which is why I originally wanted to read it – I love a good 90’s plotline. However, there was minimal description of the 1990’s era, outside of a Semisonic reference, so much so that it seemed like this story took place in present day.
3/I devoured this book, laughed out loud, and plan to recommend it to everyone I know. Lily King is such a talented storyteller!
