Reviews:
1/Encapsulates our hopes for the world,….in all our fragile, mortal, vessels. It depicts a prayer held onto with purity, innocence, ignorance…If all of us were able to hold, to convene, our individual doings with such prayer, we would be a very lucky species indeed!
I find myself wanting to be him, even when he makes the wrong choices. There is so much breath, so much oxygen in the reading of this story. If you feel short of breath, existentially, this story provides some.
2/I read this book when it first was published in 2015. I was in middle school at the time and it destroyed me in the best way possible. Friends would compare it to Fault in Our Stars (which is another book I enjoy) but I think that’s not a fair comparison as they deal with different issues. There is something so unabashedly human about Finch and Violet. Everyone experiences loss and grief. Everyone has good and bad days. And so many people hurt and struggle with mental health. All the Bright Places takes something that is unavoidable in life that people pretend doesn’t exist and puts it in the spotlight in a beautifully painful way.
3/Anyone who doesn’t understand mental illness (especially suicidal tendencies) should read this, even if they don’t necessarily want to.
