Reviews:

1/A grimdark fantasy without humor, The Poppy War uses Chinese history as its story background and base. Well-written, it reminds one exactly how inhuman humans can be when war calls.

2/The first of a series with no heroes, no humor, no joy, no good choices. Everyone is a villain and everyone is a monster and there’s nothing but wat and death. Occasionally someone uses magic, but just as an even greater form of murder. There’s no message. Just the slog of violence.

The prose is fine, a bit bland. There’s nothing particularly captivating about the author’s voice. It simply pulls you through the scenes. The pace isn’t fast but the plot is relentless. Maybe it’s meant to be an accurate reflection of war or trauma but it doesn’t teach you anything. It just forces you to endure it. I didn’t find the main character particularly compelling. She doesn’t really ever make choices for herself or have reasons. Her personality seems to be “anger.” I just didn’t enjoy the book. There wasn’t anything you could enjoy. Everything that happens is awful.

3/In the third part of this book there is so much gratuitous violence that I almost stopped reading.
It is not in any way coherent with the first 2/3.
And this story is quite derivative.
I will not be continuing with the other 2 books.
